Iman: Sana wants to have blue hair?
Scenario
Investigative judge Iman struggles with paranoia amid political unrest in Tehran. When his gun goes missing, he suspects his wife and daughter and takes drastic measures that strain family ties as social norms crumble. Director Mohammad Rasouloff was originally scheduled to attend the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a member of the Un Certain Regard jury. . However, he was arrested in July 2022 after criticizing the government’s crackdown on protesters in the southwestern city of Abadan, Iran, over a deadly building collapse. Rasouloff’s lawyer announced on May 8, 2024, that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison, along with flogging, a fine, and the confiscation of his assets. On May 12, 2024, Rasouloff announced that he had managed to flee Iran and was staying in an undisclosed location in Europe. On May 24, 2024, Rasouloff attended the film’s premiere in Cannes and on the red carpet, he held up pictures of the film’s two actresses, Soheila Golestan and Missagh Zareh. Painted nails? Why?
Children think differently
Najmeh: The world has changed. Iman: The world has changed, but God has not. And neither have his laws. Najmeh: We must teach them. Iman: We always have.. Opening credits: "Ficus Religiosa is a tree with an unusual life cycle. Its seeds, contained in bird droppings, fall to other trees. Aerial roots rise up and grow down to the floor. Then the branches wrap around the host tree and strangle it. Finally, the sacred fig stands alone.".
He has two daughters
Many of us are aware of the recent protests in Iran and the tragic death of Mahsa Amin in 2022. Hijab is mandatory in Iran and is enforced by an overzealous religious police force. It’s hard for those outside of Iran to understand that something that seems trivial to us is such a big problem. This film works because it takes us inside a family unit affected by these issues. It seems to use real protest footage (appropriately disguised) mixed with fictional actors. This gives it a more urgent edge. The husband works as an investigator for the administration. One step away from being a judge. He is hard-pressed in his job to handle a huge number of religious "crimes" without due process. He finds out that the price of his promotion is blind obedience.
We are told that he was an innocent bystander
One in high school and the other in college (college). One of the daughters has a friend who gets shot in a crowd near a protest. The mother of the family is very concerned about protecting the family’s status and reputation, which allows them to get a bigger apartment to live in. However, this will not happen unless all aspects of life are in order. spotless. They can’t even tell the daughters what the father is doing because it is a safety risk. In one of the first shots of the film, we see the father being handed bullets along with a pistol. He is promoted, but he has to be able to protect himself. We see a real literal Chekhov’s gun in the story. A concept you can look up 🙂 The pistol goes missing from the apartment and the father has to find it or face a possible prison sentence for losing it.
I saw this film at a festival
This raises the tension a few levels, and then the film changes somewhat from there. The film’s main impact is to individualize the different political pressures on each family member. The best art takes us beyond the headlines and shows us what is happening and what it looks and feels like in real life. The story is fiction, but in many ways it feels like a documentary. As a film, it is a success in helping us empathize with real people who have been subjected to such horror. Some of the scenes were unwatchable and quite emotional. It is now the 2-year anniversary of that wave of protests. It wasn’t just one person who died in the protests.
